The Closing Gender Gap -- Then and Now Essay - 2270 Words

War is inevitable because of opposing views and conflicting opinions. During these hard times, women, although rarely recognized, played a big part in the success of our country. They made their mark during World War Two when they took over the jobs of men and proved they are just as efficient in the workplace. There has been a dramatic change since then. Women have found their identity through these hardships; which in return, has set the pace for the years to come and narrowed the gap of the social norm of women in the work place. Homosexuality in Ancient Greece and Rome Essay example

Homosexuality in ancient Greece and Rome Americans endlessly recycle the old conflicts: first we fought about slavery, then segregation, then gender, and now sexual orientation-(Anon). Since the children were taken care of mostly by the government, it was important to establish a lasting relationship with someone that would teach you how to become a young m an. The military supported homosexuality, as they thought that one would fight harder to protect his unit if he had a lover or multiple lovers in the same unit. It was also believed to bring about a sense of comradeship. Similarly, the Greek attitude toward sex was, for the most part, value-neutral... And though exclusive homosexuality was probably discouraged as a threat to the family, it was widely tolerated both for older men who had children and for younger men prior to marriage.-(Blumenfeld and Raymond 1988. 155) Yet, as time went on, people who performed homosexual acts were considered polluted and to have become like women, and were therefore expelled from the military. The Greeks had double standards. Even though they recognized passion and attraction towards the same sex, those who were not attracted to women were not tolerated. Therefore, if a man was homosexual, he had to already have a wife and children. These double standards came from the fact that the society had to r eproduce in order to survive. One of the biggest advances made for families in the public health department was the prevention of childhood lead poisoning. Almost every home built before 1978 was constructed using lead paint. Lead paint affects mostly children under the age of 7, because their bodies and brains are still developing and sensitive to even the mallets amounts of lead. Lead can cause a multitude of injuries in young children; including. These include learning disabilities, brain damage (sometimes subtle) loss of intellect, academic failure, neurophysiology deficits, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), hyperactive behavior, antisocial (criminal) behavior, neurological problems, encephalopathy (brain swelling), major organ failure, coma, and even death. All these problems occur through an accumulation of lead, from the paint being ingested by infants, toddlers and children. This problem mainly occurs in low income families vying in poorly maintained housing and in poverty. This occurs because the paint in the homes was not updated since the ass’s when lead based paint was legal. In the early ass’s only 5 states had laws regarding lead poisoning prevention. By 2010, 23 of the 50 states had laws about the paint, as well as federal laws protecting against lead paint poisoning. Most of the laws including the ones in Maryland, state that before a home, apartment building or residence can be sold or rented to a family or individual, it must be inspected for lead paint. If lead paint is present in the accidence, it must be sanded off, and then repainted with a safe and nontoxic paint. Although most people don’t consider occupational safety as a â€Å"health concern† the CDC had occupational safety improvements one of their top 10 advances in public health for the last century. For example, out of the 1. Million injuries in health care workers in back problems. This is caused from the lifting of patients in nursing homes, hospitals, and residential care. The CDC stated in its article â€Å"Following widespread dissemination and adoption of [a best practices patient-handling aerogram that includes the use of mechanical patient-lifting equipment] by the nursing home industry, Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed a 35% decline in low back injuries in residential and nursing care employees between 2003 and 2009†. CDC, 2011) Not only does this practice prevent workers from being injured but also helps prevent injuries to patients from being mishandled by health care providers. Another main achievement in the last century was the advance in vaccines and their prevention of diseases. New vaccines such as retrovirus, pneumatically conjugate, trivalent macroeconomic conjugate, herpes sister, and human voluptuaries (HP) vaccines along with the tetanus, diphtheria, and cellular pressures (for teens and young adults) have been created to help with the spread of diseases. The HP vaccine was a major advancement since HP had become one of the most widely spread Stud’s in the nation. The vaccine is important because there is no way of knowing if the virus is present unless warts are present, and no way of testing for it on males or females, unless the warts themselves are visible. Also the cancerous is detected through a routine pap smear. Many teens and young adults practice unsafe sex leaving themselves susceptible to multiple Stud’s along with the silent one known as HP. Most young men and women are encouraged to get the leading HP vaccine Guardrail. The pneumatically conjugate vaccine was a major advancement for those with instrumentation diseases, infants, and the elderly. As people get older, or are diagnosed with instrumentation diseases such as Lupus or diagnosed with cancer, it makes it harder for their bodies to fight off infection and harder for them to recover. Whereas infants t not have built up a strong enough immune system to fight off such strong virus, leading to hospitalizing or complications. The CDC states in their report, â€Å"Following the introduction of pneumatically conjugate vaccine, an estimated 211,000 serious pneumatically infections and 13,000 deaths were prevented during 2000-?2008† (CDC, 2011). Their report talks about advances in older vaccines, such as Hepatitis A, B and Variable, which caused these diseases to be at record low by the end of the decade. In addition age specific mortality from variable of people under the age of 20 declined by 97% from 0. 65 before the vaccine to 0. 02 during 2005-2007. Beowulf And Grendel Essay Example For Students

Beowulf And Grendel Essay The epic poem Beowulf tells of an evil, mysterious, and ravishing creature named Grendel. Although no precise concrete descriptions or visual references were given to me throughout the story, I was able to formulate my own personal opinion of what this horrifying beast may have looked like. The amoral, despised, and feared Grendel was a colossal, muscular beast capable of ripping any human man to shreds. His razor sharp teeth and pointy horns were ideal for tearing and gnawing unsuspecting inebriated men that slept through the night in Herot Hall. His muscular build, extensive thorny tail, and mammoth size were also key factors that struck fear in the hearts of anyone who had heard about or saw this vile creature. After a long and worrisome night, the awaking Hrothgar, king of the Danes, would more than likely be greeted with the remnants of Danish warriors that had spent their last night in glittering, golden towers of Herot Hall. Grendel, pleased with his midnight feeding, would have already retreated back to the moor under the misty hills from which the savage beast had come. Grendel lived with his mother in an cave under a mucky, sickening, horrifying swamp. As I have depicted in my drawing, the towering beast has awoken from his slumber and is preparing to step into the murky waters of the swamp to begin his perilous journey to the surface. Once he arrived at the top, the blood thirsty walker of darkness would again be on his way to indulging in more human flesh. This gruesome immoral act took place for more than 12 long years, until ultimately one night Grendel encountered his inevitable fate when he was confronted by the eminent warrior Beowulf!
